Life Details
Background:
Missie's mother was once a well respected, influential Patisse mage who fell from grace after a few unfortunate mistakes. A Skraelling childhood friend of hers swept in to offer comfort and a marriage proposal, promising a simple life away from House politics in an area where Missie's mother had grown up. The two of them moved to an orchard to live off the land, although using magic to do so was encouraged in their children-- of which they had eight... and counting.
Missie had a natural affinity for invoking from an early age. She often had a spirit by her side while doing her chores, usually something fae-like. Much of Missie's free time was spent riding into the nearby woods to play with her summoned spirits and gathering wild edibles to beg her mother to turn into pie until she learned this mystical pie science herself. But she didn't neglect her farm chores, which involved tour rides through the blossoming seasons, and she often kept an eye on her younger siblings. In a sense. The Wingard children, when gathered, become a hive mind of mischief and ill advised adventure. Concussions and broken bones build character!
But Missie's mother's efforts to seclude herself had not gone without resistance. Her father-- Missie's grandfather-- worked as one of House Patisse's elected officials and was concerned for his reputation and his legacy. He eventually started inviting the family to Patisse functions, hoping to reconcile. Missie's parents refused and saw it all as efforts to enlist their children into a cut throat world of politics they wanted nothing to do with. They weren't entirely wrong, but they also underestimated the aging man's genuine desire for familial reconciliation.
But Missie's grandfather would get his opportunity later when a riding accident injured Missie severely and required more care and attention that her family could reasonably provide. Her grandfather offered to take Missie into his care, and because of his wealth and contacts, he could get her the treatment she needed and see to it that Missie was not left with permanent damage. Her parents reluctantly agreed.
The combination of physical therapy and a sudden, new environment shot Missie's stress to foreign levels. This was further complicated by her grandfather throwing magical tutoring into the mix, eager to get started on salvaging his reputation as a competent patriarch. (You don't need working legs to invoke spirits!) Missie struggled to cooperate, but languished under harsh criticisms and was inherently allergic to routine. Her grandfather, meanwhile, bounced between extremes. He openly expressed his frustrations with her performance, but also wanted to be liked, and tried to spoil Missie into submission.
She found little motivation in material gifts. As her health improved, she became avoidant, sneaking out to go riding, skipping classes, and generally acting too spacey and ditzy to be held responsible for her actions. Her grandfather became more frustrated, Missie became more stressed, and the vicious cycle continued.
A breakthrough was finally reached one fateful Christmas which would appropriately fit as a cheesy holiday special. Missie was looking forward to returning home for the holiday after she was declared fit and able, but when she sensed her grandfather's loneliness, she, despite herself, opted to stay with him.
They learned to be gentler with each other after that. Missie understands her stubborn grandfather needs her, or needs someone, and the only one willing is her. She still lives with and studies under him when she was not attending school. Originally, Missie enrolled in the Boarmoles School of Magery before transferring to Paracelsus Academy for the investigation at her grandfather's behest. Despite Missie's casual nature, she's gotten him to trust her implicitly, although his mind has certainly been clouded by favoritism as Missie grows on him.
She tries not to abuse this. ... Too often.
House Politics:
Raised to aid Patisse, Missie shares more investment with their House than with Skraelling, but with the two being allies, this isn't necessarily much of a stretch. Working with her grandfather and with Patisse gives her access to many, many delicious sweets, and that's the important thing.
Well, all right, the important thing right now is the investigation. Navigating the world of politics is a dangerous game, but it is a game, and Missie has learned to enjoy aspects of it. She's more than willing to assist with the investigation, especially if it means making sure further deaths are stopped. Her opinion of the situation and how it relates to the Tours is that this is How Things Are, and all they can do is continue reacting to it. Getting too caught up in what was, or what should have been, won't help them now. Missie will defend her House and her family, and expects others will do the same even if it's in opposition to her. Nobody's wrong. It's just... messy. Unfortunate and messy.
But crying about it changes nothing.
Personality:
Missie dances from one destination to the next and improvises songs to sing to herself during most given tasks. She is often lost in her own daydreams, and responds to reality with an impossible cheerfulness. Negative moods tend to be short lived, and are usually solved by a nap or the promise of something sweet to eat. For Missie, life is a beautiful thing, and rarely is Missie unable to find the magic and wonder in even the most mundane of concepts.
Big questions like the meaning of life never seemed all that complicated to her. Life's to be enjoyed. The end! This is, thankfully, tempered with basic morals like not hurting other people in the process of this pursuit, but there are few things Missie believes cannot be improved with an encouraging, fun-loving attitude. On the flip side, if she cannot make something fun, she quickly fails to see the point of it at all.
Though not fiercely social-- and, in fact, perhaps too disinterested in what other people think of her-- Missie tries to be friendly. She praises people readily because people should know how great they are! But this works both ways: she'll often blurt out accidental ("accidental"?) criticisms or less flattering observations without regard for appropriateness. She is paradoxically open and closed at once. Her feelings are shown easily, but she prefers to ask questions than answer them.
As a Skraelling blooded mage, Missie can succumb to magical berserking when she exceeds her personal casting limitations. This turns her into a cackling, violent maniac. Once she returns to her senses, she never seems terribly disturbed by her previous behavior. She is generally good at brushing off most uncomfortable issues and keeping calm when Hell has broken loose. Missie may not be the model of maturity (and certainly she still clings to childish pursuits), but she is able to keep rational in a crisis... for as rational as Missie can ever be considered to be.
One of her greatest fears is mage life and society turning her into someone jaded and cynical, like her grandfather. Maybe she can help everyone become a little less jaded...? That would be nice!
Flaws:
Missie dislikes structure and routine. Repetitive tasks will quickly lose her interest, and she couldn't be organized to save her life. Missie has several tardies on her record, and has gotten detentions for sleeping through lectures. Her grandfather's influence has allowed her leeway in her misbehavior, which is something she accepts without remorse. So there's also that.
Rather than confront problems directly, Missie will act incompetent to get out of doing work, or play dumb when someone's upset with her rather than asserting herself. She usually turns evasive in arguments and, occasionally, seems to secretly be enjoying when people get frustrated with her attitude, providing her with no motivation to change it.
Her life philosophy often involves the thought that stressful, unpleasant things won't matter or will be forgotten by next week, or next year. Maybe tomorrow! Sometimes those things still matter now, or, Missie being Missie, they won't actually be forgotten by the rest of the reasonable world. Basically, she can be flippant.
Missie lives by the motto, "everything in moderation, especially moderation."
Magic and Skill Details
Magic and Skills:
Invoking: Most of Missie's summons can be expected to have walked out of some kind of fairytale, not the least of which is a winged warhorse named Zodiac that Missie frequently rides into battle. He also possesses a horn (yep) for impaling Missie's enemies, and can be summoned with battle armor. He is an ancient, bloodthirsty beast who lives only for battle, and Missie sometimes braids flowers into his mane.
Other common summons are fairies or tiny, pudu-like unicorns. These are usually utilized as messengers or assistants for non-combative things, but when Missie doesn't have to focus on keeping Zodiac with her, she can use that energy to call upon swarms of fairies or unicorns to smash into her enemies with deceptive strength.
Missie's magical berserking influences her invoking. If she should fall into rage, her spirits shift to become less... pleasant.
Enhancing: Missie's enhancing is burst related rather than sustained, with specializations in strength and defense. It's important that Missie be able to leap impossible heights onto her flying mount and survive considerable falls-- whether because she fell by accident or is employing DEATH FROM ABOVE.
It's also thebest worst type of magic to have when Skraelling rage hits. MISSIE SMASH!
Polearms: Specifically, mounted combat with polearms. Missie is a better fighter on a mount than off of one, though can still reasonably hold her own on foot if it comes to it. She has brought an imbued spear to school with her, which has been enchanted to survive the impact of being used as a charging lance. FERRULE STRIKE!
